In early 2004, recognizing the need for
a regional funding and coordination
institution, representatives from
conservation funds in each country of
the MAR region (Belize, Guatemala,
Honduras, and Mexico) initiated the
Mesoamerican Reef Fund (MAR Fund).
The mission of the MAR Fund is to

partnerships for the conservation,
restoration, and sustainable use

La región SAM abarca el arrecife de coral más grande del Atlántico y forma parte de la red interconectada de hábitats costeros y corrientes que se extienden a lo largo de la cuenca del Caribe. Su línea costera se extiende por 1,000 kilómetros desde la punta de la Península de Yucatán en México hasta las Islas de la Bahía en Honduras, pasando por Belice y Guatemala. Es el hogar de algunas de las costas más impresionantes y vibrantes aguas del mundo, con una asombrosa gama de más de 500 especies de peces conocidos, algunas de las poblaciones más grandes de manatíes y tortugas marinas, posiblemente la mayor agregación conocida de tiburón ballena y valiosas concentraciones de manglares, pastos marinos y corales.
