{"id":1952,"date":"2018-12-11T09:59:34","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T15:59:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marfund.org\/en\/?p=1952"},"modified":"2018-12-11T11:01:06","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T17:01:06","slug":"awards-winners-photography-contest-life-in-the-mar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marfund.org\/en\/awards-winners-photography-contest-life-in-the-mar\/","title":{"rendered":"Awards given to the winners of the photography contest  \u201cLife in the MAR\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"text-align: right;\">Francisco David Penados Saravia &#8211; First Place<br \/>\nPhoto: Lucy Calder\u00f3n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>By Lucy Calder\u00f3n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Mesoamerican Reef Fund (MAR Fund) organized the photography contest \u201cLife in the MAR\u201d to celebrate the International Year of the Reef 2018 (IYOR 2018) and thus engage more people to learn about and support the conservation of these valuable ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Participants from the four countries that share the Mesoamerican Reef System (MAR): Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras, competed. Thirty-four photographs were submitted. A jury selected the 13 finalists that will be included in the MAR Fund 2019 calendar. The pubic voted to choose the first three places.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>First place:<br \/>\nFrancisco David Penados Saravia, Guatemala<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For Francisco, a <em>dive master<\/em>, winning the first place has a special meaning because he is expecting his first child, to whom he owes the fortune of having been the winner. \u201cAs the saying goes, babies bring bread under their arm,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe reef is the heart of the marine world and underwater photography is one of my passions,\u201d said Francisco enthusiastically at the award ceremony.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Claudio Gonz\u00e1lez and Patricia Cabrera, technical coordinator and administrative coordinator of the MAR Fund, respectively, awarded Francisco the prize: a GoPro Hero5 camera, a first place certificate and a check for US$200.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Link to the first place award presentation:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pWT9lUtz3Rc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Youtube Channel<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1633\" src=\"http:\/\/marfund.org\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/PrimerLugar-Entrega-Pemio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Left to right: Francisco Penados next to Patricia Cabrera and Claudio Gonz\u00e1lez, of MAR Fund.<br \/>\nPhoto: Lucy Calder\u00f3n<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Second place:<br \/>\nHenry Allan Brown, Belize<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt was a pleasure to participate in this photo contest. I think there should be more contests like it to encourage young people to come out and have contact with the environment, and take pictures of how it looks through their eyes. In addition, the prizes were very attractive,\u201d said Henry Allan Brown of Belize, who obtained the second place in this contest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI am saving money to buy an underwater camera so the US$300 prize will help me greatly to reach my goal. My only suggestion is to make the voting process simpler next time\u201d, Henry added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1633\" src=\"http:\/\/marfund.org\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/segundo-lugar-henry-brown.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Left to right: Angeline Valentine, of MAR Fund, giving the prize to Henry Brown, winner of the second place.<br \/>\nPhoto: Renison Enriquez<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Third place:<br \/>\nLinda Searle, Belize <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The winner of the third place, also from Belize, said that she submitted the photo of a green sea turtle taking fresh air, because sea turtles are \u201cthe great ocean migrants\u201d and are excellent worldwide representatives of marine conservation efforts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Linda, every time she can, she tries to raise awareness about the continued conservation of sea turtles, as they are important emblematic species and a valuable asset to demonstrate the biodiversity of the Belize Barrier Reef and the entire Mesoamerican Reef System.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Linda added that, with the photo that she participated with, she wanted to show that each breath represents each individual effort towards ocean conservation and knowing how charismatic sea turtles are, she also wanted to capture the attention of the judges. That is why she was pleased to know that Green up for Air was selected as a finalist for the calendar, but she did not imagine how difficult it would be to work to get enough votes to place it among the first three places.
