{"id":308,"date":"2017-06-14T12:15:31","date_gmt":"2017-06-14T18:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marfund.org\/en\/?page_id=308"},"modified":"2024-11-29T10:53:30","modified_gmt":"2024-11-29T16:53:30","slug":"what-is-marfund","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marfund.org\/en\/what-is-marfund\/","title":{"rendered":"What is MAR Fund?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;509&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In early 2004, recognizing the need for a regional funding and coordination institution, representatives from conservation funds in each country of the MAR region (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico) initiated the Mesoamerican Reef Fund (MAR Fund).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">MAR Fund is a private fund with a Board of Directors comprised of international collaborators, experts, the Central American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD), and the in-country funds from each of the Mesoamerican Reef countries &#8211; Protected Areas Conservation Trust (Belize), Fundaci\u00f3n para la Conservaci\u00f3n de los Recursos Naturales y Ambiente en Guatemala (FCG), Fundaci\u00f3n Bi\u00f3sfera (Honduras), and Fondo Mexicano para la Conservaci\u00f3n de la Naturaleza (Mexico).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The mission of the MAR Fund is to drive regional funding and partnerships for the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of the Mesoamerican Reef.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To do so, the MAR Fund operates as an ecoregional planning and coordinating body which prioritizes projects and allocates funding. The Mesoamerican Reef Fund aspires to be known and respected as a trustworthy and transparent fundraising mechanism able to sustain and finance effective transnational alliances, policies, and practices that conserve the Mesoamerican Reef and advance the health and well-being of the region\u2019s people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MAR Fund carries out its mission through five programs, as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Saving Our Protected Areas: A Legacy of Caring<\/strong><br \/>\nEstablishment and protection of an interconnected network of priority coastal and marine protected areas in the region.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fishing for the Future: Sustainable Fisheries for a Thriving Reef<\/strong><br \/>\nCommunity participation in co-management of their fisheries, establishment of fish replenishment zones, and monitoring and protection of fish spawning aggregations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate Change: The Need Is Now<\/strong><br \/>\nSupporting adaptation to climate change and its impacts on the reef.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Belize Marine Fund: Enhancing Marine Conservation<\/strong><br \/>\nEnhancing marine conservation in Belize with the participation of local stakeholders, for wider regional benefit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clean Water for the Reef<\/strong><br \/>\nImproving sewage and solid waste management for a healthier ecoregion and its people.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;509&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text] In early 2004, recognizing the need for a regional funding and coordination institution, representatives from conservation funds in each country of the MAR region (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico) initiated the Mesoamerican Reef Fund (MAR Fund).
